Contingency planning is identifying what could possibly go wrong in a situation and having a 'back up plan' to cover it. For example, if you were coaching a school PE session on football outside (considering you have no use of indoor space that could be used for this particular sport) and it begins to hailstone/thunder and lightening. This weather is not appropriate for around 30 children running around in shorts & polo shirts. Therefore, another plan has to be put in place so that there is always something that can be participated in. This, of course, is only a minor thing that could happen. If someone is injured, there should also be something organised so that the rest of the group can continue without anymore interruptions.
