There are many risks and hazards in sport. The most common ones probably being equipment that has been left carelessly around, falling on a slippy surface and general equipment being used in the wrong way and harming someone. A sporting example of a 'hazard' would be someone throwing a javelin: a safety line is used to prevent going past it, until instructed to do so. This reduces the risk of an accident happening.
The risk of hazards in sport can be reduced by warming up&down, wearing the correct clothing/shoes, using the right equipment, no jewellery and obeying the rules.
If the risk was NOT reduced in sport, injuries such as pulled muscles and broken bones would occur; as would illnesses such as shock, violence such as fighting with the opposition or officials and gamesmanship such as cheating.
Risks and hazards from people;
Food - Eating when in participation of physical activity is not advised, as this can lead to indigestion, a stitch, declines in performance and even choking.
Jewellery - Wearing jewellery in sports is not allowed, as it can potentially cause injury to the wearer and others around them. If jewellery such as bracelets are worn, a member of either the wearer's team or a player of the opposing team could get their finger caught in the bracelet in an attempt to steal the ball.
Risks and hazards from equipment;
Lack of protective clothing or equipment - When you do not wear the correct clothing or use the correct equipment can make a participant vunerable to injury. For example, shin pads must be worn when playing football, because the tibia is often kicked accidentally, in an attempt to get the football.
Faulty or damaged equipment - Every piece of equipment must be checked before use. If it's faulty, it cannot be used and must be replaced before someone else uses it.
Risks and hazards from the environment;
Rain - Rain can lead to flooding and muddy pitches, which make football a lot harder and also increase the risk of slipping and the causing of injury.
Hot weather - When the weather is hot when participating in physical activity, the body finds it harder to cool down, which could lead to heat stroke, heat exhaustion or even death. In hot weather, there is always the risk of sunburn, so participants must be equipped with suncream to prevent this. It is advisable to drink lots of fluids and staying out in the sun at midday.
